Well now, this
presents a bit of a problem.
We have NO
TRULY ERUDITE supportive Research.
(We think it
would make a terrific topic for someone's dissertation.)
Our problem
was that once we discovered this better way, we couldn't maintain
a "control group" with which to compare the group using
the Verb Wall. We could not continue the disservice to the students
by teaching the old way, so we considered the control group to be
all the students we taught BVW. (Before Verb Wall)
THIS
WORD JUST IN:
Rebecca Kaatz,
Assistant Superintendent, Clark County Schools, Las Vegas, NV, former
student of mine, former Spanish teacher, current sister-in-law-in-law
married to my husband's brother, just informed me of a wonderful
little book that seems to confirm many of my ideas concerning the
Verb Wall. She showed me a copy at our family Christmas gathering,
which I then informed her I was keeping as my Christmas present
from her.
UNDERSTANDING
LEARNING: the How, the Why, the What
By Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D.
This small book
presents a synopsis of recent studies of the brain and the processes
involved in learning. In it Dr. Payne presents the major ideas in
an easy-to-understand manner. I would highly recommend getting this
book and reading it several times, perhaps once a week for a while,
just to keep the thoughts fresh in your mind! I have read through
it three times now, and each time something new penetrates the old
brain cells.
BUT, that was NOT my
research, so back to the real world:
In the immortal words
of James Yoder from
Las Vegas, Nevada:
"All
I know is, it works for me!!"
If you are a VERB WALL
user and want to join James in saying, "It works for me!"
send us your name,
city, state and e-mail and we will add you to the list!

Quotation
from Lucy Holmes:
"I am a Spanish teacher in Mobile Alabama who has recently
discovered your site. I know you must receive thousands of emails
like mine, so I will try to be brief. After 16 years of teaching French,
I am back in college studying Spanish. I am THRILLED with what is
going on in the world of FL teaching!! To me it is far more exciting
than what I did 25 years ago. I find myself invigorated and my love
for teaching renewed by ideas such as "communicative learning",
"foreign language aquisition", and "artificial realities".
People like you who have taken the time to provide others with such
terriffic resourses as your Verb Wall are not only unbelievably generous,
but are TEACHERS in the truest sense of the word! For me your VVWWS
is everything I find exciting about teaching." |

"I've
attended two of your Verb Wall seminars and I have, in my opinion,
the BEST Verb Wall this side of the Mississippi! Without it, I'd
be missing a HUGE teaching opportunity!
Thank
you so much!"

"I'm
soooo excited!
Last
year, I bought Pam Kaatz's verb wall (color-connection.com), and put
it up. It was 4 months into the year or so, and my kids got it eventually.
They had already seen "traditional" organization of verbs.
The Spanish 2 kids really took a while. I put it up last night. My
Spanish 1 kids have only had Spanish (TPR phase) for a week. I showed
them how it worked. Then, they conjugated (in Spanish) we sing, they
swim, you talk, I write!!!!!!!!! After 5 minutes of intro to the verb
wall, including time for me to run back and forth in the different
tenses to demonstrate moving through time!!!!!!!!
I
was so happy I cried!!!! A former Spanish 2 student was in the room
(she's my helper), and she was amazed too!!!! Oh, it's wonderful what
these kids can do given the right tools!
Thanks Pam!!!!!!!" |

I
finished my 4 day unit plan on the "Verb Box" [that I am
preparing for a graduate class in methodology] and I am reminded of
how truly blessed I am to have met you. You make my life easier and
I love you from the bottom of my heart. God is so AWESOME to have
created such an amazing person as yourself with such divinely inspired
ideas. As I go back to your website, I see that I only very superficially
comprehend the depth of what you have done. One day I will get to
it all. I want it ALL! It is all so fabulous! If you have a bad day
think of me because you HAVE made a difference in at least one person's
life.
Mil gracias
y mando besitos
